Black Business Month 2022

Its National Black Business Month and August 2022 is giving joy! Cakewalk Chicago began the month with some self care as we explored the world on a much anticipated family vacation and celebrated the life of our newest ancestor Aunt A. Thank you for letting us take our break. Didja Miss us? What was the world like WITHOUT Cakewalk Chicago?

  • Ms. Nina graciously let me redesign this seasons window and my wacky vision did not disappoint because Cakewalk Chicago is the 2022 winner of the ‘Most Amusing” Project Windows design contest. Oh yeah. I checked in erly and oftern with Ms. Pat, the window angel! Many thanks to Sis Dinavia for representing Cakewalk Chicago at the awards ceremony. It was so great to be surprised by my friend Stanley Smith with Oak Street Design when he came to see the window in person. The Project Windows visual display contest was launched in 2012 is a way for retailers to leverage the Art Institute of Chicago's world-class exhibitions that attract tourists from all over the globe. Over the years, it has evolved into a city-wide celebration of art and creativity, allowing retailers to craft beautiful, inspired, traffic-stopping displays and tap into our city's cultural energy. I'm so proud of this window you’ll get to see it all the way until November! #SorryNotSorry

Accomplishments and Upcoming:

  • Wrapped up cohort of 7 DePaul’s Women in Entrepreneurship Institute Accelerator Program. Another great business building cohort is in the books. Know how when you come in the shop I might whisper "Hey there. Just lmk what you need. I'm in a class rn." Well. This is one of the learning opportunities that I am taking advantage of. Sharing the joys and pain of business ownership with this group of amazing women entrepreneurs was refreshing. And it's the gift that keeps on giving. Many of you noticed that our loyalty program kiosk was damaged. Well #WeGotAGrant that allows us to replace that old system with a customer facing option. Make sure that you visit the shop in the coming weeks to see the updated loyalty program station in action. Check out this article about the tech grant that we received to help us level up! Read the full article here.

  • I completed a labels and tags class to increase offerings to our exclusive Cakewalk Chicago members and on the horizon I will be dusting off that Circuit machine too. Pre cut #edibleimages anyone?

I have thoroughly enjoyed Summertime Chi - whether applying for grants, searching for work class baking and decorating tools, enjoying a garden cocktail making class or just chilling with the ducks it has been a good summer! Check out one of my favorite at home bartending cocktail recipes here.

And learn more about baking and duck eggs here.

Do you happen to be one of the lucky recipients of some of the Cake Lady's city fresh farm eggs? Lmk what you loved making with these incredible gems right from my back yard. Say hello to Afro. If we get any baby duckies this year he IS the father!

  • Looking forward to Fall Classes: It’s always great to get to present on topics that I am passionate about stay tuned for Charging Your Worth with Confidence, Birthday Camp Bootcamp, Fondant Fundamentals workshop and more!

  • New World Class Products much of my time is spent sourcing unique and new to you trending products for cake decorating, baking and candy making. As we more towards the fall and winter seasons we will introduce more products like our exclusive subscription boxes and one of a kind products like our very own limited edition #Divine9 full size greek letter cookie cutter set representing #BlackGreek Organizations. One of each letter representing our amazing history.

August feels like a month dedicated to creating, frequent upgrades, and trying to enjoy all summer in Chicago has to offer. Thank you for being here, for supporting this vision, and for following along with this entrepreneurial journey.
